Pediatric Endocrinology Workshop
Background
Monitoring of growth and puberty in children and adolescents helps in early identification of undernutrition, growth disorders, overweight, obesity, thyroid, pubertal, & other endocrine disorders and systemic illness.
Assessment of growth by objective anthropometric methods is crucial in child care. India is in a phase of nutrition transition, and thus it is important to update growth references regularly. Appropriate choice of growth charts and meticulous growth monitoring is an integral part of preventive pediatrics. In an attempt to increase awareness about the importance of growth monitoring among practicing pediatricians and postgraduates, we are planning to conduct a growth and puberty workshop in association with the Pedicon 2024 in Kochi. In addition, there would be a session covering the ambulatory management of childhood diabetes essential for pediatric practice.
Objectives
After attending the workshop pediatricians will be able to –
- Identify children with growth deviation – under and overnutrition and initiate appropriate management and follow up.
- Diagnose and plan appropriate treatment without delay for diseases manifesting through abnormal growth like growth hormone deficiency, thyroid disorders, Turner syndrome, precocious and delayed puberty.
- Sensitize more clinicians and paramedical staff to use growth charts in children.
- Learn basic ambulatory management of childhood diabetes.
